Patients With Which Lung Diseases Should Be Vaccinated Against Flu?

In patients with a chronic lung disease, influenza infection may worsen the existing disease and may necessitate hospitalization.

The Flu Vaccine For Patients With Lung Dieases

Pulmonary diseases that are especially deteriorated by influenza infection are chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis affecting airways and interstitial lung diseases affecting the lung parenchyma. In patients with chronic lung disease, the flu is more likely to cause pneumonia, and this increases the likelihood of influenza-related hospitalization, respiratory failure and death. Lung cancer patients are likewise affected by influenza and therefore it is recommended that those who do not receive immunotherapy get inactivated flu shot.
